Seven projects commemorating Australia’s wartime heritage have been awarded a total of more than $355,000 under the Saluting Their Service program, the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Centenary of ANZAC, Stuart Robert, announced today.
“The Saluting Their Service program is designed to involve people nationwide in projects and activities that directly commemorate the service and sacrifice of Australians in all wars, conflicts and peace operations,” Mr Robert said.
“The funding, awarded under the Major Commemorative Grants category of the program, supports organisations undertaking activities that recognise the roles played by Australia’s servicemen and women in shaping the nation.”
Seven grants were awarded across four states and the ACT. The largest grant of $186,364 went to the Canberra-based University of NSW School of Humanities & Social Sciences to create Phase 2 of its 'Australia's Vietnam War' website.
NSW received a combined total of more than $100,000 for two grants—one to create a virtual war memorial about the Anzacs of Greece and Crete, the other to construct a memorial dedicated to Australian Commandos.
The diverse range of projects funded also included the recording of a symphonic work, an Indigenous community research project, a cultural exhibition, and construction of a memorial park.
“I commend the individuals involved in these projects for their work to ensure that the legacy of those who have served our nation lives on for future generations,” Mr Robert said.
