Community organisations supporting veteran health and wellbeing

More than $825,000 in community grants for grass-roots programs to improve the health and wellbeing of veterans and their families around Australia were today announced.

Minister for Veterans and Defence Personnel Darren Chester said the Veteran and Community Grants (V&CG) provide funding for activities and services within local veteran communities to help maintain the mental and physical health of our veterans and their families.

“I am pleased to announce that 34 organisations have been allocated funding to deliver programs for veterans and their families, to help reduce social isolation, support carers and improve access to services,” Mr Chester said.

“For example, the Toowoomba Returned and Services League (RSL) Sub-Branch will use the funding to host a series of social events for veterans living in rural areas.

“It’s projects and programs like the one from Toowoomba RSL that are making a real difference in the lives of our veterans and their families, which not only supports local organisations to help keep our veterans connected, but also has a flow-on effect to regional communities and local businesses.”

“I encourage any organisations looking to support veterans and their families with programs such as these to review the grant guidelines and submit an application for funding.”

Other successful projects include the development and delivery of a wellbeing program for younger veterans, nutrition and yoga classes, and a National Rugby League Officiating accreditation course for ex-service men and women.

The Veteran and Community Grants program helps ex-service organisations, veterans groups, community organisations and private organisations deliver projects that promote a healthy lifestyle or help veterans to remain living independently. To find out more information visit the Veteran and Community Grants program page on the Department of Veterans’ Affairs website or the Community Grants Hub to apply.
