Joint media release — Australian Government funds Shepparton Light Horse statue

A sculpture commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Armistice of the First World War will be built in Shepparton thanks to a $170,000 grant from the Australian Government.

The funding, which will be provided to the Greater Shepparton City Council, was announced today by Minister for Veterans' Affairs Darren Chester and the Federal Member for Murray, Damian Drum.

Mr Chester said the funding would allow the council to commemorate the Light Horse Brigade in a memorial.

"This memorial is an example of a great way local communities can commemorate the centenary of the First World War Armistice," Mr Chester said.

"Projects like this create a lasting legacy for the community and they help educate the younger generation of Australians about the service and sacrifice of those who served."

Mr Drum said a local Goulburn Valley war hero, Sir Murray Bourchier, led his regiment in the charge at Beersheba, the most famous Light Horse charges in Australian history, so it was fitting that Shepparton commemorates the Light Horse Brigade.

A proposed design of the memorial was created following a local public competition calling for artists.

"I commend the work that has been undertaken on this project to commemorate the Light Horse Brigade, as well as our local hero Sir Murray Bourchier," Mr Drum said.
