Statement — Vale Leslie Allen Carlyon AC

It is with great sadness that I extend my condolences on behalf of the Government to the family and friends of Leslie Allen Carlyon AC who passed away on Monday, 4 March 2019.

Les was many things in life — husband, father, grandfather, journalist, historian, author — and through his work was a passionate advocate for how we commemorate the service and sacrifice of the men and women who have served in our defence forces.

For more than a decade Les served on Council of the Australian War Memorial, and during his life penned two important books remembering those who served in the First World War, 'Gallipoli' and 'The Great War'.

And while Les is gone, his lasting legacy of literary works will live on for generations to come.
