Leopold War Memorial receives Armistice grant

The Leopold War Memorial will receive a $30,000 Federal Government grant.

The grant has been provided through the Armistice Centenary Grants Program (ACGP) which has delivered $7.2 million over two years to local and community-based projects around Australia that commemorate the end of the First World War, the Centenary of Armistice and the celebration of peace.

Minister for Veterans and Defence Personnel Darren Chester said the AGCP was a one-off grants program to support community commemorative projects in each federal electorate across Australia.

“Over the last two years, the AGCP has funded almost 780 community projects across Australia,” Mr Chester said.

“The grant of $30,000 will allow the Leopold War Memorial Committee to fund Stage 2 of its construction.

“Once complete, the Leopold War Memorial will provide a place for remembrance and honour for the 146 residents of the Leopold district in Geelong who enlisted in the First World War, including 40 locals that did not return home.”

Mr Chester said 2019 would see a shift in focus towards commemoration of the Second of the World Wars.

“On September 3 we mark the 80th anniversary of the start of the Second World War,” Mr Chester said.
