Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan today announced a $50,000 grant to help World War II veterans of Bomber Command Operations travel to Canberra and attend the 75th anniversary commemorations of the bomber offensive.
Mr Tehan said the grant money would be provided to groups representing veterans of RAF Bomber Command to travel to the Australian War Memorial for the national commemorations on 4 June.
“More than 5000 Australians lost their lives while serving in Bomber Command and thousands more served their nation from the day after hostilities commenced until the Germans surrendered in 1945,” Mr Tehan said.
“Members of Bomber Command had just a 40 per cent chance of surviving a single tour, which comprised 30 operations.
“On the 75th anniversary of Bomber Command we will reflect on the service and sacrifice of the men who flew those missions faced with such overwhelming odds.
“This grant money is a small token of the nation’s gratitude to the veterans of Bomber Command and their brave service in defence of our nation and values.”
