Joint media release - Opening of Capricorn Veterans’ and Families Support Centre
Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan said the Capricorn Veterans’ and Families Support Centre in Yeppoon would bring together support services under one roof to benefit the local veteran community.
Mr Tehan today officially opened the centre, which is based at the RSL Yeppoon Sub Branch at 15 Normanby St.
“The RSL and Mates4Mates are working together from the one location to bring together veterans and their families and create a community of support,” Mr Tehan said.
“The new centre will be staffed by contemporary returned service personnel and will provide support to members of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) who are transitioning into civilian life.
“The men and women who have served in our defence forces share a special bond and this centre will be an important space where they can come together to access services and forge a community.
“Michelle Landry has been a passionate advocate on veterans’ issues in Capricornia.”
Capricornia MP Michelle Landry said the centre was a great success story for the Yeppoon RSL Sub branch.
“The Yeppoon RSL Sub branch put in a lot of hard work assisting our returned soldiers during tough times,” Ms Landry said.
“This program being run from the Yeppoon location will not only provide returned servicemen and women with an option for employment, but will provide local, on-the-ground assistance to our returned servicemen and women.
“Assistance will not only be available during advertised times from the sub branch, but will also be available by appointment for home visits.
“This has not been seen before outside a capital city, so the Mates4Mates office in Yeppoon is a ground breaking and innovative move.
“This service will also provide support to not only service personnel but their families, giving them a centre and group of peers proven to protect against the danger of PTSD related issues without feeling the distance of separation from the cities.”
