VIC VETS VIE FOR CREATIVE KUDOS

The creative talents of Victoria’s ex-service community will be celebrated at today’s official launch of the 2015 Victorian Veteran Community Story Writing and Art Competition (SWAC) exhibition.

“I congratulate the organisers on the continued popularity of this exciting event, which has this year attracted 503 entries and generous sponsorship from the corporate and community sectors,” the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Senator the Hon. Michael Ronaldson said.

“The competition is a joint initiative of Victoria’s ex-service organisations, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital. The competition continues to enrich the lives of entrants and the broader community”.

“For members of the ex-service community, participating in SWAC can play an important role in enhancing their health and wellbeing. For many, it helps to heal the impact war has had on their lives and provides an opportunity to have their work publicly acknowledged.”

The SWAC began in 1962 at the Repatriation General Hospital as therapy for returned soldiers. This year, prizes will be awarded to the winners and their work will be featured in the annual publication BRAVO! Recollections and Reflections of the Veteran Community.

“I am looking forward to seeing and reading the range of entries, especially the special writing category for 2015, Centenary of ANZAC – 100 Years of Service,” the Minister said.

The art, craft, photography and story writing entries will be on display for public viewing at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital for one week, 14–20 September. The winners will be presented their prize on 27 November at the official prize presentation ceremony.
