War Widows’ Guild celebrates 70th Anniversary

The Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Centenary of ANZAC, Stuart Robert, has congratulated the War Widows’ Guild of Australia on its 70th Anniversary.

Attending a dinner marking the milestone last night, Minister Robert said the War Widows’ Guild had been instrumental in assisting women whose lives had been forever changed by war.

“The work the War Widows’ Guild has done over the past 70 years to provide companionship, counselling and support to the widows of our war dead is remarkable,” Mr Robert said.

“The Guild has been a powerful and influential voice for war widows over seven decades. The work they do to lobby for, and advance the interests of, war widows is greatly appreciated by its members and I know, highly valued by Governments.”

Mr Robert said the War Widows’ Guild was established in 1945 and, at its peak, had more than 65,000 members.

“I congratulate the Guild on this significant anniversary and thank you for the extraordinary work you do,” Mr Robert said.

“You have helped, and continue to help, make the lives of women whose husbands have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country a little easier.”

Mr Robert said it was fitting that the Guild’s 70th Anniversary coincided with the 100th Anniversary of the Gallipoli landings.

“Earlier this year, the Australian Government was honoured to host a group of 10 amazing First World War widows at the 2015 Anzac Day commemorative services in Turkey,” Mr Robert said.

“Many of these women are Guild members and they embody the War Widows’ Guild mission: We all belong to each other. We all need each other. It is in serving each other and in sacrificing for our common good that we are finding our true life.

“On behalf of the Australia Government, I pay tribute to the War Widows’ Guild of Australia and recognise your 70 years of outstanding service.

“The work you do continues the legacy forged by our Anzacs.”
