Minister meets with European Counterparts

The Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Centenary of ANZAC, Stuart Robert, departed for Europe today to inspect Australia’s key Anzac Centenary commemorative sites and meet with his European counterparts.

Speaking before he left Australia, Mr Robert said he was honoured to be attending a Remembrance Day service in Paris, and to be inspecting Australia’s commemorative sites in France, Belgium and Turkey.

“During this Anzac Centenary period we commemorate the 100th anniversary of some of our most significant First World War battles – at Gallipoli, the Western Front, and in the Middle East,” Mr Robert said.

“These sites provide vital links to Australia’s war history for future generations of Australians, and it is important that we continue our work with local authorities to ensure their longevity.”

Minister Robert will be visiting sites at Polygon Wood, Fromelles, Pozieres and Gallipoli.  He will also participate in ceremonial events in Paris, Ypres and Villers-Bretonneux.

He will hold discussions with foreign dignitaries including the Mayors of Fromelles and Pozieres, the Minister President of Flanders, and will visit the Gallipoli Peninsula where he will meet with local dignitaries.

“It is important to ensure the continued support of our allies and friends in giving the appropriate recognition of our service personnel,” Mr Robert said.

The Anzac Centenary 2014 to 2018 is the most significant period of commemoration in our nation’s history.  It is a time to acknowledge the service and sacrifice of all those who have defended our freedoms over the last 100 years, and those who continue to represent us in wars, conflicts and peace operations today.
