AUSTRALIANS SHARING COMMEMORATIVE EXPERIENCES ONLINE
Today, I am pleased to launch the Anzac Centenary Facebook Photo app to help Australians to get involved in the Anzac Centenary from anywhere in the world.
During the Centenary of Anzac, we mark a century of service and sacrifice, encompassing all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations in which Australians have been involved. The Centenary will be the most significant period of commemoration in our nation’s history and the Government is committed to providing opportunities for all Australians to participate.
The Anzac Centenary Facebook Photo app is accessible via the official Anzac Centenary Facebook page and provides users the opportunity to show their commemorative experiences.
Following my attendance at the Bita Paka commemorative event earlier today, I was able to share this experience through the app.
One hundred years ago, Bita Paka in German New Guinea saw the first Australian action of the First World War for Australian servicemen. This action resulted in Australia suffering six dead but taking possession of the German wireless station. Those Australians killed at Bita Paka were the first of some 60,000 who lost their lives in the four-year conflict.
I uploaded images from Bita Paka using the app to capture and share the significance of the commemoration with others, to help broaden our understanding of where Australians fought and why they fought.
Our first major domestic commemoration will be the Albany Convoy Commemorative Event remembering the first convoy that left Australia and those who later became known as the ANZACs. I encourage those attending this event to use the app to share this significant time with those unable to attend.
As we move through the Anzac Centenary period, the app will provide us with the ability to share the diversity of commemorations across the world.
I encourage people attending the commemorations throughout the four-year period to help leave a lasting legacy for others when we look back and remember with great pride those commemorations and events that were reflective of Australia’s involvement in the war. Paying tribute to and remembering those who have worn and will wear the nations uniform.
The Anzac Centenary Facebook app is one way to create a lasting visual record of commemoration in Australia and from around the world.
