LOCAL CENTENARY GRANTS COMMEMORATE ANZAC CENTENARY

Today, during Question Time, I announced a further 119 grants worth $975,000 have been approved under the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Programme, bringing to more than $3.34 million in funding for local commemorative projects has been approved to date under the programme.

The Centenary of Anzac will mark a century of service and sacrifice, encompassing all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations in which Australians have been involved.  It will be the most significant period of commemoration in our nation’s history and the Government is committed to providing opportunities for all Australians to participate.

It is pleasing that the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program has received outstanding support from electorates across Australia.  More than 1,700 applications have been received, with 331 grants in 72 electorates approved to date.  These grants will help communities to reflect upon the stories of their local servicemen and women for future generations to come.

Many communities across the country have given great thought to how they can remember the First World War. There are a wide range of commemorative stories and projects spanning from school projects, war memorial and honour rolls and community events to remember those who were involved in the war, encapsulating the service and sacrifice of those who have worn the nations uniform.

The projects funded include:

  • Re-enactment of the Kangaroo March that occurred from Wagga Wagga to Campbelltown in 1915, NSW
  • Enhancement of the remembrance garden at Bannockburn Primary School in Victoria with the addition of First World War artworks, decorated by the students including commemorative paving
  • Restoration of a First World War Red Australian Ensign flag for display during 2015 at the Pioneer Hall, Buderim, QLD
  • Presentation of a contemporary dance and film exhibition titled ‘Faces’ at the Canberra Theatre Centre that analyses the social environment that surrounded the First World War and how it fundamentally shaped the modern era.

The Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program is a key element of the Australian Government’s Anzac Centenary program, with up to $125,000 in funding made available for each Federal electorate to commemorate the First World War. This provides an additional $3.75 million and brings to $18.75 million in funding for the Program.

More information about the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program is available at www.anzaccentenary.gov.au .
