Australians planning to mark the Centenary of the Gallipoli campaign in 2015 will have an additional commemorative service to attend, the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Senator the Hon. Michael Ronaldson announced today.

Senator Ronaldson said the Turkish Government had approved the Australian Government’s request for a commemorative service to be held on 6 August 2015 marking the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Lone Pine.

“The Centenary of Anzac will be the most significant national period of commemoration in our nation’s history and the Government is committed to providing opportunities for all Australians to participate,” he said.

“The battle at Lone Pine saw some of the most fierce fighting of the Gallipoli campaign. Over four days, Australia suffered more than 2,000 casualties.  Seven Australians were awarded the Victoria Cross for their bravery at Lone Pine.”

Senator Ronaldson said the Lone Pine service offered an additional opportunity for Australians to commemorate the Centenary of the Gallipoli campaign in 2015.

“Lone Pine is an important site for a 100th anniversary service, commemorating the contribution of more than 50,000 Australians who served at Gallipoli during the eight-month campaign and the 8,700 who died.”

Senator Ronaldson said the service at Lone Pine would complement Anzac Day commemorations at Gallipoli on 25 April 2015.

“The ballot for attendance at Anzac Day commemorations at Gallipoli in 2015 had an overwhelming response with more than 50,000 applications from Australians and New Zealanders,” he said.

“All applicants will be notified of the ballot outcome shortly. Those who do not receive a ticket to the Anzac Day Dawn Service through the ballot process may consider attending the commemorative service at Lone Pine in August or visiting Gallipoli at another time during 2015.”

More information on the Lone Pine commemorative service will be available on the DVA website shortly. For more information on the Gallipoli 2015 ballot visit
