Media reports today that the new Government had requested the Turkish Government increase the numbers at Gallipoli in 2015 are incorrect.

As Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Centenary of ANZAC, I am very grateful for the assistance that our generous Turkish hosts are providing to ensure the success of the 2015 Centenary commemorations.

The Turkish Government some time ago placed a limit of 10,500 attendees for the 2015 commemorative service at Anzac Cove, on the basis of a number of requirements including the safety of those attending.

The new Government accepts this position without question and has not had any discussions with the Turkish Ambassador or the Turkish Government about lifting the number of places, nor did it ever intend to.

Any embarrassment that this report may have caused the Turkish Government is deeply regrettable and, as is appropriate, I understand the media outlet concerned will take appropriate action to address the misinformation reported today.
