NORTHERN TERRITORY STUDENT TO RECEIVE $9,000 EDUCATION BURSARY
Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Warren Snowdon, today presented Darwin River student, Dimity Jessup, with an education bursary worth up to $9,000 to help meet the costs of her post-secondary education.
Mr Snowdon said the Long Tan Bursary Scheme provides eligible children of Vietnam veterans with financial assistance to help gain the qualifications and skills they need to pursue their chosen career.
“I am pleased to congratulate Dimity on this great achievement. She is an extremely dedicated and diligent student and it is these qualities that have seen her selected to receive a Long Tan Bursary.
“Dimity is studying a Bachelor of Humanitarian and Community Studies and a Certificate IV in Tourism at Charles Darwin University.
“The Australian Government is committed to ensuring the ongoing support of our veteran community, with more than 400 sons and daughters of Vietnam veterans receiving a bursary since the scheme was first introduced in 2000,” Mr Snowdon said.
Fifty-six Long Tan Bursaries will be awarded to students across Australia in 2011, with a total value of more than $500,000.
The financial assistance will help cover the costs associated with post-secondary education including university courses and vocationally-oriented courses, such as those offered by TAFE institutions, business colleges and art schools.
Applications for each academic year open on Vietnam Veterans’ Day, 18 August, and close on 31 October. To be eligible, applicants must be a child of a Australian Vietnam veteran who has Australian residency status and is enrolled, or planning to enrol, in post-secondary education in Australia.
The Long Tan Bursary is administered by the Australian Veterans' Children Assistance Trust on behalf of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
