GRANTS IN EVERY STATE AND TERRITORY TO HELP TO HONOUR AUSTRALIA’S WAR VETERANS
The Minister for Veterans’ Affairs today announced funding for 87 new projects across every State and Territory of the nation to help honour the service of Australia’s veteran community.
Mr Snowdon said Australian Government funding of $225,603 for Saluting Their Service grantswould commemorate our wartime history and honour those who have served, and continue to serve, Australia in wars, conflicts and peace operations.
Saluting Their Service provides funds to help communities build and maintain memorials, capture the wartime history of their towns, and preserve memorabilia for future generations.
“The 87 projects range from assistance to hold a dinner in Hobart to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Air Force, to funding for a new exhibition in Newcastle to highlight the role of the Merchant Navy during the Second World War, as well as support for upgrades to memorials all across the country,” Mr Snowdon said.
The Saluting Their Service program also helps fund events to commemorate significant wartime anniversaries. In 2011, this includes the 70th anniversaries of the battles Australians fought in Greece and Crete during the Second World War as well as the 45th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in Vietnam.
“Australian service has been a part of the history of every city and town across the country and, through these projects, we can help to ensure the contribution of our servicemen and women is remembered and their sacrifice is not forgotten,” Mr Snowdon said.
