WEST AUSTRALIAN STUDENTS TO RECEIVE EDUCATION BURSARY
Four students from across Western Australia will receive up to $9,000 each to help meet the costs of their post-secondary education, the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Warren Snowdon, announced today.
Mr Snowdon said the Long Tan Bursary Scheme provides eligible children of Vietnam veterans with financial assistance to help gain the qualifications and skills they need to pursue their chosen career.
“I am pleased to congratulate these exceptional young people on their hard work and commitment to their education that has seen them selected to receive a Long Tan Bursary.
“The Australian Government is committed to ensuring the ongoing support of our veteran community, with more than 400 sons and daughters of Vietnam veterans receiving a bursary since the Scheme was first introduced in 2000,” Mr Snowdon said.
Fifty-six Long Tan Bursaries will be awarded to students across Australia in 2011, with a total value of more than $500,000.
The financial assistance will help cover the costs associated with post-secondary education including university courses and vocationally-oriented courses, such as those offered by TAFE institutions, business colleges and art schools.
Applications for each academic year open on Vietnam Veterans’ Day, 18 August, and close on 31 October. To be eligible, applicants must be a child of an Australian Vietnam veteran who has Australian residency status and is enrolled, or planning to enrol, in post-secondary education in Australia.
The Long Tan Bursary is administered by the Australian Veterans' Children Assistance Trust on behalf of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
