NEW MEDALLION TO HONOUR NUCLEAR TEST VETERANS A medallion to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of the British Nuclear Testing Program in Australia will be distributed to those Australians who directly participated in, supported or assisted in the tests, the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Bruce Billson, said today. Mr Billson said the medallion was commissioned by the Australian Government, and will be provided to honour the service of Australian military and civilian personnel who were involved in the British Nuclear Test Program in Australia between 1952 and 1963. "This medallion recognises the contribution of those Australians who participated in test programs at the three test sites of the Monte Bello Islands in Western Australia, and Maralinga and Emu Field in South Australia," Mr Billson said. The last major nuclear weapons trial on Australian soil was in October 1957, with minor trials continuing until 1963. The weapons testing programs involved military personnel as well as civilians. The Australians involved constructed test sites, observed tests, took and assessed samples following the tests, and monitored dust clouds in the air and on the ground. Military personnel were also responsible for maintaining equipment, including aircraft, used during the tests. "The Australian men and women involved in the testing provided a valuable contribution to the weapons testing and are recognised for their efforts," he said. The medallion’s design reflects the significance of the tests and highlights the three test locations. It also features the Commonwealth Coat of Arms and is inscribed with Service to Australia. Medallions will be distributed to those who directly participated in, supported or assisted in the tests, and their widows or widowers, in October 2007. Nuclear test participants who are not contacted by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs can call 1800 044 029 for information on how to apply for a medallion. The Department will also place advertisements in newspapers around the country to endeavour to make sure that all eligible recipients receive their medallion.
