RWANDA SERVICE UPGRADED TO ‘WARLIKE’ Australian Defence Force personnel who served in Rwanda from 1994-1995 will have their service recognised as ‘Warlike’ following a review by the Department of Defence and a decision by the Australian Government, the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence, Bruce Billson, announced today. “More than 630 ADF personnel made a significant contribution to Operation Tamar, the United Nations Mission in Rwanda, during a time of terrible and brutal conflict,” Mr Billson said. “The operation had previously been classified as ‘Non Warlike’ and the change in status will provide greater recognition and enhanced ongoing support for those who served. “Rwanda Veterans will now receive the Gold Card at age 70, with access to free and comprehensive health care, retain existing entitlements and benefits, and be eligible for the Australian Active Service Medal,” Mr Billson said. “Veterans will also have access to the Service Pension at age 60, five years earlier than the age pension from Centrelink, and those unable to work may be entitled to immediate access to the Invalidity Service Pension,” “These additional benefits will enable greater long term security for both veterans and their families who have played an important and difficult role in the service of their country and for the wider international community. “Operation Tamar was conducted during an horrific humanitarian disaster in which it is estimated more than 800,000 people were killed. Australian Defence Force personnel, under constant threat from mines and booby traps, took part in armed operations to clear militia from displaced persons camps, gave critical medical assistance to the Rwandan people and provided ready reaction troops. “The welfare of ADF personnel before, during and after service is a priority of the Australian Government and this change in status reflects the recognition and support Rwandan veterans deserve,” Mr Billson said.
