GOVERNMENT FOCUSES ON HEALTH OF VIETNAM VETERANS’ CHILDREN The Australian Government would examine the feasibility of conducting a study of the health of the children of Vietnam veterans, the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Danna Vale, announced today. Mrs Vale's announcement for funding to conduct a feasibility study follows a recent meeting with representatives from the Children of Vietnam Veterans Health Study group that was sponsoring research in this area. "The Government has a strong record of responding to the concerns of Vietnam veterans and their families," Mrs Vale said. "We already have responded to those concerns by funding access for families to counselling through the Vietnam Veterans Counselling Service, the introduction of the Vietnam Veterans Children’s Support Program and the Long Tan Bursary Scheme and the establishment of the Sons and Daughters project. "However, it is important that we develop a greater understanding of what else can be done to support the children of Vietnam veterans." Mrs Vale said an independent scientific advisory committee would be established to look into appropriate methods of studying the health of Vietnam veterans’ children. "In addition, a consultative forum will be set up, with membership drawn from the Vietnam veteran community and their families, to liaise with the wider veteran community about the feasibility study." Mrs Vale said members of the Children of Vietnam Veterans Health Study group would be invited to serve on the consultative forum. "It is important that in supporting the children of Vietnam veterans we make sure that the most appropriate assistance is provided. This research will ensure Government programs continue to be targeted to areas of greatest need," Mrs Vale said. Media Contact: Claire Bannon 02 6277 7820 or 0423 781 896 |
