AUSTRALIA FAREWELLS LAST WORLD WAR I MERCHANT MARINER

The Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Danna Vale, today expressed her sorrow at the passing of dual World War veteran, Kenneth Jessop-Smith.

Mr Jessop-Smith passed away on Monday 14 October at the Southern Cross Nursing Home in Turramurra at the age of 100. He is survived by two children, eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

“The Australian Merchant Navy played a vital role in Australia’s war-effort by keeping supplies moving in areas fraught with very real danger.

“The young men involved in these activities, like Mr Jessop-Smith, showed courage and determination as they fulfilled their duty, and we admire them for that.

“Mr Jessop-Smith was the last surviving Australian merchant mariner to have served in World War I. We have lost a living link to that time, and we are poorer for the loss.

“To have served our nation in two World Wars makes Mr Jessop-Smith a part of a very special group of veterans who have bravely earned our gratitude and respect across the decades.

“He, like all our war veterans, has helped to shape the country that we love into one of democracy and freedom.

“I extend my sincere condolences to his family at this time,” the Minister said.

Kenneth Jessop-Smith, born in Wales, was just 15 years old when he joined the Australian Merchant Navy in June 1916.

During World War I, Ordinary Seaman Jessop-Smith served on ships trading throughout the Pacific to New Zealand and the United States of America.

At the end of the war, Mr Jessop-Smith remained in the Merchant Navy as a career sailor. When World War II broke out, he served around the Australian coast, including in the Torres Strait and near Darwin.

In 1999, Mr Jessop-Smith received the 80th Anniversary Armistice Remembrance Medal, awarded to all living World War I veterans. This was the first commemorative medal in the Australian system of honours and awards.

A private family funeral was held for Mr Jessop-Smith on Thursday, 17 October.

With the passing of Kenneth Jessop-Smith, only 11 known Australian World War I veterans remain.
